Shop subwoofers by size

Size sets the trade between output, low-frequency extension and the space the box needs. An 8 or 10 inch sub in a small ported box is enough for a hatchback that wants tight, musical bass. Twelves are the most flexible size and the most popular here. Fifteens and eighteens move more air per watt and dig deeper, at the cost of a bigger enclosure.

Popular series

Some lines have a following of their own. American Bass Godfather and Orion HCCA are the big-motor SPL subs; DC Audio Level 4 and Incriminator Judge sit in the high-power daily class; Massive Audio Hippo and Prodigy NB5 are the value picks. Our own SSA GCON and SSA ZCON were designed here and are the subs we know best.

How to choose a subwoofer

Power handling

Match the subwoofer's RMS rating to the amplifier's RMS output at the impedance you will wire it to. Peak numbers are marketing; RMS is what the voice coil survives. A little more amplifier than sub is fine with a clean signal; a lot less amplifier driven into clipping is what burns coils.

Impedance and voice coils

Most subs here are dual voice coil. A dual 2 ohm sub wires to 1 ohm or 4 ohms; a dual 4 ohm sub wires to 2 ohms or 8 ohms. Pick the coil configuration that lets your amplifier see its rated load: one dual 2 ohm sub on a 1 ohm stable monoblock, two dual 4 ohm subs on the same amp, and so on. Ask if the arithmetic is not obvious; it is the most common question we answer.

Sealed or ported

Sealed boxes are smaller and tighter; ported boxes are louder and go lower for the same power. Nearly every sub in this collection has a manufacturer-recommended box, and for the popular models Basshead Supply and Xtreme Enclosures build one that matches. See subwoofer enclosures and the Basshead Supply range.

Recone kits

Blew a coil? Many of the subs we sell can be reconed rather than replaced. DC Audio recones and SSA recone services are listed with the subs.

Complete the bass system

Sound Solutions Audio has been building bass systems since 2006 and is an authorized dealer for every brand on this page. Orders over $199 ship free in the US, financing is available at checkout, and the same people who answer the phone run these subs in their own vehicles.

Frequently asked questions

What size subwoofer is best for a car?

Twelve inch is the safe answer for most cars: enough output for daily listening in a ported box that still fits a trunk. Go to 10 or 8 inch if space is tight or you want quicker, tighter bass; go to 15 or 18 inch if you have the trunk space and the amplifier and want more output and deeper extension.

Dual 2 ohm or dual 4 ohm?

It depends on how many subs you run and what load your amplifier is stable at. One dual 2 ohm sub wires to 1 ohm (or 4 ohm); one dual 4 ohm sub wires to 2 ohm (or 8 ohm). Two dual 4 ohm subs wire to 1 ohm; two dual 2 ohm subs wire to 2 ohm or 0.5 ohm. Pick the combination that puts the amplifier at its rated impedance.

How much amplifier power do I need?

Aim for an amplifier whose RMS output at your wired impedance is roughly equal to the subwoofer's RMS rating, anywhere from about 75% to 125%. Set gains with a meter or an oscilloscope, not by ear, and the sub will live a long time.

Sealed or ported box?

Ported for output and low-end extension in a bigger box; sealed for accuracy and a smaller footprint. Most of the subs here are designed with a ported enclosure in mind, and the manufacturer's recommended volume and tuning are on the product page or available from us.

Can a blown subwoofer be repaired?

Often, yes. Many SSA, DC Audio, American Bass and other subs on this page have recone kits: a new cone, coil and spider assembly that drops into the original basket and motor. It costs a fraction of a new woofer. Recone kits are listed in the collection alongside the subs.
